We would like to present you a publication from the editorial schedule of VEDA – publishing house of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, Bratislava [ Slovakia ]:

Bilingual (Slovak/English) Statistical Yearbook of the Slovak Republic 2007, ISBN  978-80-224-0990-2, 688 pages + 16 pages of colored supplements as well as electronic version on CD-ROM.

In addition to the regularly published data, the seventeenth annual volume of the Statistical Yearbook of the Slovak Republic is bringing to you a significant amount of statistical information on the demographic, economic, and social development of our society and its comparison with foreign countries. The essential part of this publication keeps its practical stability and at the same time reflects the changes undergone in statistical information during the last year. In comparison with previous issues, this volume contains new survey concerning the section of education. Also, the data regarding healthcare are stated in a new, innovated form. The section on agriculture is enriched by the results of the 2005 Farm Structure Survey. These data were not included into last year´s issue due to time restraints. In connection with the adoption of new acts on family and on the social legal protection of children, the structure of published data on criminality was adjusted. The publication is enriched also by data on election statistics into the self-governmental bodies of municipalities in 2006.

It is important to know that statistics provides decision makers with the scientific basis for problem formulation, collection and analysis of data and drawing sound inferences from the given information. In the past decade, the emergence of a global economy and the increasing focus on quality of product and services on one hand and the recognition of the role of statistics in designing and controlling the production process on the other, has made statistics an integral part of modern management in any competitive organization. Moreover by providing techniques that establish and analyze structure and trends in the data together with a methodology for quantifying uncertainty, statistics is widely used in all fields of research today.

The Statistical Yearbook of the Slovak Republic was produced by the staff of the Statistical Office and in cooperation with the ministries and other institutions, which contributed with their data sources, and edited by the Slovak Academy of Sciences – publishing house VEDA, which operates also as a distributor.
